About half of all Medi-Cal beneficiaries are in managed care plans. Enrollees are typically children, pregnant women, and non-disabled parents. California has a unique system of managed care, with three different models operating across various counties:
- Two Plan: Medi-Cal beneficiaries are enrolled in one of two managed care plans, either a public entity known as a “Local Initiative” or a commercial plan.
- County Organized Health System (COHS): A county operates the only offered Medi-Cal managed care plan.
- Geographic Managed Care: Medi-Cal contracts with various commercial health plans.
